Humane society planning low-cost service

By Krista Craig krista@thenewsobserver.com The Humane Society of Blue Ridge (HSBR) is working on a plan to bring low-cost veterinary care, including spaying and neutering pets, for low-income individuals and families of Fannin County.

Blues Train returning as Kiwanis heads Ferst effort

By Glenn Harbison glenn@thenewsobserver.com The Blue Ridge Rotary Club began the program in 2012 and now the Kiwanis Club of Blue Ridge is stepping up to continue the first ten years of success. The program was introduced as the Ferst Foundation in 2012 and today it’s known as Ferst Readers.

Pantoja gets 30 years

By Glenn Harbison glenn@thenewsobserver.com Alfredo Pantoja Pantoja has been sentenced to 30 years, with eight years to serve and the remainder on probation, in connection with child molestation and associated charges brought against him in September 2019.

Payne retires after 38 years with EMS

T he year was 1982 when Oscar Henry approached Fannin County commissioners with a proposal for the county to take over the ambulance  service from his funeral home. Soon afterwards, commissioners agreed, the ambulances moved across the street and Darrell Payne came with them.

Fannin’s ISO rating improves

Fire Chief Larry Thomas told Fannin County commissioners he was happy to give them good news regarding the county’s Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating.

Adopt A Pet

Big and small, Fannin County Animal Control has got them all, or several kinds of dogs anyway. All dogs taken to Animal Control are housed at the facility until being reclaimed or adopted. This past week, nine dogs were taken in, and three were reclaimed. One dog was adopted.
