Rodeo this weekend in Blue Ridge

The Kiwanis Club of Blue Ridge and Mountain Valley Motors are bringing the 26th annual Championship Rodeo to the Kiwanis Fairgrounds in Blue Ridge this weekend, Friday and Saturday, August 19 and 20. Gates open at 6 p.m. with rodeo action getting underway at 8 p.m.
The speed limit between the end of the spillway bridge at Lake Blue Ridge Dam on Old Highway 76 and the Blue Ridge city limits is being reduced to 30 miles per hour due to increased traffic in the area. Commission Chairman Jamie Hensley said last Wednesday new signs would be posted as soon as possible and hopefully by the end of last week.

Fannin County commissioners have agreed that a reduced speed limit is needed for safety reasons in the area of the new Fannin County school system facilities on Old Highway 76.

Sosebee sentenced to 90 days plus five years probation

Former Fannin County Tax Commissioner Shirley Ann Sosebee has been sentenced to serve at least 90 days and up to 120 days in jail and five years on probation. She was also fined $6,355 and must meet other terms of a negotiated plea approved by Superior Court Judge James E. Cornwell Jr.

Millage rollback planned by county, schools

Fannin County and school system officials are promising to do all they can to keep tax bills comparable to last year even though the number and value of real estate sales have driven up property assessments.

Adopt-A-Pet

Fannin County Animal Control had taken 13 dogs into their care as of Friday morning, August 5. This past week, two of the dogs were owner reclaimed, and two were sent to Homeward Bound. Volunteers are welcome to visit, walk and play with dogs at the facility during business hours.

No foul play seen in man’s hanging

No foul play is suspected in the death of a man found hanging from a tree in front of the cemetery on Summit Street in Blue Ridge Tuesday, August 2. Lieutenant Samuel Rosiles of the Blue Ridge Police Department said Officer Pete Tinkman was dispatched to the scene shortly before 8 p.m.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) officials have acted quickly in response to Fannin County concerns over closing the William T. “Boss” Mull bridge over the Toccoa River in McCaysville while it is rebuilt.
