Foundation works to “stand in the gaps” for veterans

Veterans in North Georgia needing basically any type of help are now able to go through the North Georgia Veterans Assistance Foundation (NGVAF)  in Blue Ridge. The foundation’s mission is to “stand in the gaps for those who’ve served.

Sherry Morris is retiring as executive director of Fannin County Family Connection (FCFC). Morris’ retirement was announced last Thursday and comes after nearly ten years of her dedicated service to the organization.

An increased demand to feed Fannin County’s hungry children has come with the beginning of the school year. Debby Beck said last week that Snack in a Backpack is serving 150 more students this year than last as well as providing more teacher snack boxes than ever before.

Ridings first from Fannin to earn spot in state theater

Abigail Ridings is the first Fannin County High School thespian to ever make it to the Georgia Thespians’ All-State Theatre as a performer. For the majority of Ridings’ life, she has been involved in the arts—starting with dance at the age of four.

Residents are being targeted with a new scam warning them they are not registered to vote. Sonia Smith, chairwoman of the Fannin County Board of Elections, warned of the scam last week. It appears to be a click bait scam seeking citizen’s personal information, she said.
A portable building that will house the Polk County Health Department now sits in the lower parking lot below the Copper Basin Senior Center. County Executive Robby Hatcher said he is working on two more buildings, one of which has been confirmed, so that other services provided in the senior center can continue during repairs.

A Chattanooga, Tennessee, man has been charged in connection with a two vehicle crash that killed a Louisiana man. The crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 26.
