Alcohol license gets okay in McCaysville

Plan: Speed signs received for Hillcrest

The Rum Cake Lady Cuban Cafe in McCaysville will soon be serving beer and wine since the McCaysville City Council voted to approve the business’ alcohol license.

The vote took place during their regular meeting Tuesday, October 8, with Councilman Billy Chastain was the only member to vote against the license.

Police Chief Michael Earley recommended the license after informing the council that the business and owners have been in compliance with the Malt Beverage and Wine Ordinance.

In other action, the council was all in agreement to have Councilman Jason Woody negotiate with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and bring back a proposal.

GDOT has asked for the city to pay 75% of a proposed $120,000 water main relocation, which serves Church Street and Dickey Street, and requested the city allow GDOT to handle the replacement.

“I think they should have to pay for it because it’s part of their taking out that line,” Woody said. “However if we get trumped on that, and we have to foot the bill, I think we’re going to install it. We could do it for a fraction of the cost.”

The council also approved an amendment for a 2021 Georgia Environmental Finance Authority loan for the water meter replacement project.

“This is to finish out our meter project,” Woody said.

The amendment increased the loan amount by $110,000 while the city has already borrowed $4,991,000. The loan comes with up to half forgiveness.

They also agreed to come up with a plan to assist in the Hurricane Helene tropical storm relief in Western North Carolina and South Georgia.

Chastain proposed coming up with a plan to which Earley told of his experience while visiting and delivering supplies.

“We would be better served if we took it ourselves,” Chastain said referencing the efforts of many other local entities.

Since then, a plan has been established, and the city will accept donations at city hall beginning Monday, October 21.

They have called for donations of non-perishable items, water bottles, baby food, baby bottles, diapers, wipes, tarps, tools, lighting, batteries, animal food, new coats for adults and children, cleaning supplies, socks, buckets and blankets.

A request for volunteers was also made, and anyone interested may call 706-492-4921.

During reports, Earley told the council he has received the speed signage for Hillcrest Drive and plans to have it all put up this week.
