Young Basin gardeners see results of their efforts

Copper Basin Elementary School (CBES) has a club that provides students the knowledge to sustain themselves while keep ing themselves nourished as well. CBES’ Garden Club was introduced about four years ago, told club advisor and fifth grade teacher Gerome Smith.

Fannin schools rollback millage

The Fannin County School System opted to go with a rollback millage rate of 10.391 for 2020 during a Board of Education meeting Thursday, August 13. This rate is down from 2019’s rate of 10.593.

Theater thankful, donations still being accepted

Blue Ridge Community Theater (BRCT) thanks the community for raising over $34,000 to relieve deficits caused by COVID-19 closures. The GoFundMe campaign, where folks made their donations, has been stopped, but anyone who wishes to donate may still do so by sending checks to 2591 E. First St.

Kiker over police, park money still available

McCaysville City Councilmember Susan Kiker is the new police commissioner, a OneGeorgia grant has been extended, over $30,000 in spending was approved, and a house now on city park property was considered for sale or lease.
Fannin County EMA will receive $96,285.39 through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for COVID-19 response from the federal government. Fannin County EMA received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for COVID-19 response from the federal government totaling $96,285.39, of which the county will put in $8,753.22 as a match.

Blue Ridge raising hotel/motel tax

The City of Blue Ridge held it’s first readings for the Hotel/Motel Excise Tax Ordinance Amendment, Special Event Ordinance and Street Performance Ordinance during a Tuesday, August 11, council meeting. The Hotel/Motel Excise Tax Ordinance Amendment includes a change from 5% to 8% in taxes.
