Free coats to be distributed

Coats and blankets collected during The News Observer’s annual Coats for Kids drive will be distributed next week. The distribution will be held at Fannin County Family Connection at 501 Industrial Park in Blue Ridge, Monday through Wednesday, November 1-3, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.

Dale Dyer passed Saturday at 101

Our good friend and long-time columnist for The News Observer, Dale Dyer, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 23. Dale wrote weekly for over 20 years, chronicling his life experiences and his many efforts to maintain the history of Fannin County.

Safe zones, various events planned for Halloween celebrations

This just in: Fannin and Polk Counties will see an increase in ghosts, witches, princesses, superheroes, and more this weekend. However, do not be alarmed, they have been invited to attend Halloween Safe Zones and other events happening throughout the counties.

Last minute move raises election concern

Early voting for a mayor and five council members for the City of Blue Ridge is underway as the Tuesday, November 2, General Election nears, but a recent city council vote could create a negative impact.

Adopt a pet

Fannin County Animal Control has a slew of pawsome dogs at their facility. All dogs taken to Animal Control are housed at the facility until being reclaimed or adopted. This past week, 15 dogs were taken in, two were adopted, and two were reclaimed. No rescues took any dogs this week.

Cat of the week

The Humane Society of Blue Ridge cat of the week is Daffodil. She is a one-year-old tabby who is the prettiest flower in the garden! Daffodil has gorgeous gold eyes that will draw you in and mesmerize you. She is a bit shy with new friends, but once she warms up to you, she is a very loving girl.
Fannin County was forced to close this bridge on Newport Road last Thursday after an inspection found it to be deficient. A bridge specialist was to be at the site Tuesday, October 19, to determine the best way to fix the structure.

County closes Newport Road bridge

Fannin County officials closed a bridge last week after a state inspection discovered deficiencies in the structure. The bridge on Newport Road was closed Thursday afternoon, October 14, soon after the deficiencies were found, Commission Chairman Jamie Hensley said.
