The Fannin County Board of Education approved a bid for the replacement of the HVAC systems at Fannin County Middle School(FCMS)and at Fannin County High School (FCHS) as well as a plumbing replacement project at FCHS.
The board unanimously approved Bowen & Watson for all three projects, which are estimated to cost $2,125,500, during their regular meeting Thursday, October 14.
The HVAC replacement projects will be paid for with CARES money, and the plumbing replacement will be paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds.
All three replacement projects are slated to begin in the summer of 2022 and be completed by July 31, 2022.
The board also unanimously approved the purchase of a plasma cutting table in the amount of $31,000 to be paid for with SPLOST funds.
“This plasma cutter will provide students within the welding pathway, the carpentry pathway, the fine furniture pathway, and the engineering pathway with hands-on training that will improve their employability skills and career capabilities. This plasma cutter will also allow the welding program to meet required classroom instructional standards through Computer Numerical Control plasma cutting and manual plasma cutting,” said Director of Learning and Achievement Lucas Roof.
Deputy Superintendent Sarah Rigdon asked the board to approve a policy change regarding resident
students and their assigned attendance zones when a student moves into another attendance zone.
This policy change will only impact students who attend Fannin County elementary schools since there is only one middle school and one high school.
The board unanimously approved the policy change which will allow resident students to remain at their current school until the end of the year as opposed to switching schools beginning the next semester when a student moves into a different attendance zone.
At the end of the school year, the resident student should transfer to the school in their new attendance zone, or the family should apply for the School Choice lottery for the upcoming school year. The lottery is open between June 1, and June 30, each year.
Roof also informed the board that the on-site visit by the Georgia Accrediting Commission Accreditation for all five Fannin County schools went well and that the schools and the school system have been accredited for another five years.
