Fannin schools preparing for 14% state funding cut

The Fannin County Board of Education discussed their Fiscal Year 2021 timeline and the effect the COVID-19 pandemic will have on the budget during a meeting Thursday, May 14. The system has received guidance from the state to expect a 14% cut for all state agencies in the state’s budget.

Naval Academy bound

Fannin County High School Class of 2020 graduate Matthew Shirah has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA), where he will play baseball. “I’m definitely really excited,” he said. “It’s going to be interesting because it’s a different environment.

Businesses beginning to re-open

Phase I of Governor Brian Kemp’s re-opening plan is underway and many local businesses are taking advantage of the lost time. Around 20% of restaurants in Fannin County are open, according to Jan Hackett, Fannin County Chamber of Commerce.

An elderly woman can now sleep peacefully in her home, under a new roof thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Fannin and Gilmer Counties and other contributers. Virginia Card and her late husband worked hard to pay for their home in 1985.
