Program helps teach infants are capable of learning

New mom Kailee McCue would never have guessed that her daughter Paisley was able to learn about math at just six months old. “My first thought was, ‘That’s crazy. My daughter’s six months old. Why do I need to prepare her for kindergarten?’” said McCue.

“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Fannin County and the surrounding area,” Jeanie May wrote to introduce Champions for Children, this year’s night when Snack in a Backpack honored community members and raised funds.

Leadership Fannin program includes educational visits

Trout project comes to Blue Ridge Elementary School

Blue Ridge Elementary School(BRES) STEM teacher Tori Arp received a shipment of roughly 200 rainbow trout eggs to raise with her students. The eggs, which resemble red-tinted pearls, come from Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom Program.

School board training continues

Fannin County Board of Education members are continuing a tradition of extensive training set by previous boards. This year’s training began in January with a three-hour session focusing on the roles and responsibilities of board members.

A Fannin County High School (FCHS) student was immediately detained by School Resource Officers  (SRO) after a hit list of death threats he allegedly made was found on a computer. Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby said the list was discovered Friday afternoon, February 14.

Volunteers provide free services to dogs, cats

Members of Fannin County Barking Buddies organized a free vaccine clinic for cats and dogs at Cohutta Animal Clinic on Saturday, March 1. The event offered rabies shots, core vaccines and microchipping completely free to the public.

Trio of flags to be framed for courthouse

A trio of flags is now being framed to hang in the Board of Commissioners conference room in the Fannin County Courthouse. One flag was officially presented to commissioners in a ceremony last Tuesday, and the other two had already been delivered.

Polk County home destroyed by fire

No one was injured as a result of a house fire in Ducktown Thursday, February 20; however, Copper Basin Fire Chief Marty Senterfitt said that there was someone inside as the fire began. Volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the College Street home at 1:45 p.m.

Victims of deadly crash identified

Barry Jackson, 60, of McCaysville, and Michael Waits, 65, of Epworth were both killed Monday night, February 17, in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 5 south of McCaysville.
