Kiker over police, park money still available

McCaysville City Councilmember Susan Kiker is the new police commissioner, a OneGeorgia grant has been extended, over $30,000 in spending was approved, and a house now on city park property was considered for sale or lease.
Fannin County EMA will receive $96,285.39 through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for COVID-19 response from the federal government. The following people, from left, were instrumental in receiving the grant: EMA Director Robert Graham, Volunteer Bill Brown, 911 Director and EMA Deputy Director Patrick Cooke, EMA Deputy Director Darrell Payne and Fire Chief Larry Thomas.

Fannin EMA receives $96,000

Fannin County EMA received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for COVID-19 response from the federal government totaling $96,285.39, of which the county will put in $8,753.22 as a match.

Blue Ridge raising hotel/motel tax

The City of Blue Ridge held it’s first readings for the Hotel/Motel Excise Tax Ordinance Amendment, Special Event Ordinance and Street Performance Ordinance during a Tuesday, August 11, council meeting. The Hotel/Motel Excise Tax Ordinance Amendment includes a change from 5% to 8% in taxes.

McCaysville residents will be able to speak for or against multiple changes to the city’s alcohol ordinance when their elected officials meet in September and October. Council members approved the latest draft of an ordinance amendment at their regular meeting August 11.

Blue Ridge council members waste no time disagreeing

Issues arose between City of Blue Ridge council members almost immediately after calling their Tuesday, August 11, meeting to order. Councilwoman Rhonda Haight asked if the agenda needed amended prior to starting the meeting, to which Mayor Donna Whitener agreed.
