Richard Allen Jarom, age 81, of Morganton,  passed away Sunday, December 4, 2022, in the Union General Hospital.

Richard was born July 23, 1941, in Berwyn, Illinois.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Willard and Elsie Jarom; and by his eldest son Timothy (Joy).

He is survived by his wife Linda; his two brothers, Thomas and Neil (Carol); his two younger sons,  Christopher (Libby) and Matthew (Jessica); his step daughter, Holly Giani (Paul); his ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Richard was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. He exhibited exceptional athletic skills at an early age. He excelled at baseball, basketball and football in high school. He attended Drake University on a basketball scholarship and starred as the shooting guard position for four years.  He then achieved a Masters Degree in Education and Physical Education at Kansas State University, Pittsburg, Kansas.

He began his successful teaching and coaching career in 1964 at Altamont    High School (Altamont, Kansas, 1964-1966). He moved on to teach and coach at Hinsdale Central High School (Hinsdale, Illinois, 1966-1973).  From there he went to Wheaton Central High School (Wheaton, Illinois 1973-1983).  He ended his teaching and coaching career at Wheaton Warrenville High School (Wheaton, Illinois 1983-1993).

At Wheaton Warrenville High School he successfully led the varsity women’s basketball team to second place in the State of Illinois High School 1985 basketball tournament.

Richard was a parishioner at St. Clare’s Episcopal Church in Blairsville, Georgia. He was also a proud member of the Easy Does It Group.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s name to St. Clare’s Episcopal Church in Blairsville.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements.
