FANNIN COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2023
By Mike Harper
Logan Daves began his football career as an eighth grader at Fannin County Middle School. His accomplishments over the next decade have earned him a spot in the 2023 induction class of the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame. He singles out two people as positive influences in his early development as an athlete and as a young man. He credits his mother, Sonya Daves, for “her dedication to serve and sacrifice for her children and to make sure that I was supported in whatever path I chose.” He also credits Tom Dean as the “first man to take time to teach me and show me what competitiveness looks like at an early age.” Tom, father of Hall of Fame member Nick Dean, was an outstanding athlete at East Fannin High School and a charter member of the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame board.
Logan was the epitome of consistency for the Fannin County Rebels football teams of 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was a starter on both offense and defense for the Rebels during those three seasons. He played the game in the trenches, at guard on offense and at a tackle slot on defense. He was a standout on both sides of the ball achieving an 85% blocking efficiency on offense coupled with 205 career tackles defensively. His career tackles number included fourteen stops for a loss, with two interceptions as icing on the cake.
He was a formidable force packing 280 pounds of muscle on his 6’ 2” frame. Logan was very strong and a regular visitor to the Fannin High weight room. In 2009 he set a school record in the squats weightlifting discipline breaking the record set by teammate and 2023 FCSHOF inductee Bryant Meeks.
After his senior season of 2009, Logan was named to the All-Region team and his team’s Most Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Lineman. Dennis Wilson, his offensive line coach said that Logan was “probably the best offensive lineman I’ve ever coached or seen.” Along with fellow Hall of Famer Nick Dean, he was selected as a co-captain of the 2009 Rebels football team. The highlights of his career include starting and playing a pivotal role on the 9-2 Region championship team in 2007, victories over Gilmer County all four of his high school years and three consecutive wins over Rabun County. Logan also remembers the final game of the 2009 season against North Oconee High School as a ‘team victory’ over a strong opponent.
Clark Drennan, who was the head gridiron coach throughout Logan’s high school career gives Logan high praise for his leadership, commitment to excellence and performance. Drennan says that Logan was a hard worker who improved each year throughout high school.
Logan’s teammate and pal Nick Dean has this to say about his friend: “Logan was a great leader on and off the field and in the weight room. He was extremely humble but respectfully feared. He was relatively quiet but when he spoke, you always listened. His work ethic, drive, passion for the game and presence on the field were unmatched, I always loved running behind him because I knew he was going to do his job and do it well. Logan was one of the best there was and continued his dominance at the next level. I’m proud of the man he has become and thankful for the memories we made both on and off the field.”
After graduating from Fannin County High School, Logan went on to play in the offensive line for Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. He was a three-year starter for the Eagles and won four varsity letters. He was named to the Sunbelt Conference Honorable Mention team as a senior. His coaches at Georgia Southern praised Logan for his combination of exceptional strength, attention to detail and on-field leadership. He was selected as a team captain for three seasons.
Logan Daves graduated from Georgia Southern University in 2015. He served as a graduate assistant for the Eagles in the weight room and earned his strength and conditioning certification from the NSCA in early 2016.
After completing his time at Georgia Southern, Logan accepted a position as Offensive Line and Weight Training coach at Calvary Day School in Savannah. He then became the Offensive Coordinator job at Toombs County High School in Vidalia, Georgia where he continues to coach at this writing. He also serves as an assistant coach of the Toombs wrestling team.
Logan and his wife Macy met at Georgia Southern, where Macy studied athletic training. They were married in June of 2016. Macy and Logan welcomed their first born, Laiken Woodrow Daves, to the family in December, 2019.
Logan becomes the third member of the 2007 Fannin County High School football region championship team to be elected to the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame, joining Nick Dean and Bryant Meeks on the membership roster. That team was loaded with talent so look for more teammates will join them as time goes by.
