Opal McGowan

Mrs. Opal Vanette McGowan, age 77, of Merritt Drive Blairsville, formerly of Blue Ridge, passed away peacefully Monday, January 16, 2023, in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.

Mrs. McGowan was born January 31, 1945, in Blue Ridge, the daughter of the late Jerry C. Twiggs and the late Lucille Whitlow Twiggs.

Opal was a Caregiver for many of years and was gifted in taking care of others. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Wanda L. Johnson and a brother, Grover H. Twiggs.

Mrs. McGowan was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. McGowan are one daughter, Shea Auche of Blairsville; two sisters, Kathy Newman and Jan Newberry both of Blue Ridge; three grandchildren, Sarah, Joseph and Steven Auche; one great-grandchild, Naomi, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Shriner Children’s Hospital in Mrs. McGowan’s memory.
