Johnny Newton

John “Johnny” Henry Newton Sr, age 83, of Morganton, Georgia, passed away Monday, November 7, 2022, surrounded by family at his son’s home in Mineral Bluff.

John was born August 28, 1939, in Gilmer County, Georgia, to James Ed Newton and Nanny Mae Dempsey Newton.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rachel Davenport Newton; sons, Ron Newton, and Dewayne Newton; and brothers, Louis Newton, and Harold Newton.

He is survived by his son, John (Janice) Newton Jr., and daughter-in-law Rita Newton. Granddaughter, Amanda (Ryan) Chastain; grandson, Jonathan (Brittany) Newton; grandson, Josh (Brittany) Newton; grandson, Andrew (Sydney) Newton; great-grandchildren, Harper Newton, Henry Newton, Baylon Newton, Riley Newton, Emerson Newton, Bridger Newton, Andi Newton, and Ella Kate Chastain; He is also survived by sisters, Louise Ballew, and Linda (Johnny) Wright of Ellijay; one sister-in-law, Reba Newton of Dalton, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

John was a wonderful husband and father. He was a deacon and member of Maple Grove Baptist Church. John loved his family deeply. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. His favorite pastime was working in his yard and sitting on his front porch.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Doyle Davis and the Rev. Joe Dan Wilkins officiating. Music provided by Brittany, Harper, and Henry Newton, Ryan Chastain, and Teresa and William Nelson. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The following gentlemen serves as pallbearers, Jonathan Newton, Josh Newton, Andrew Newton, Earnest Davenport, Frank Parris, and Tommy Bailey.

The family will receive friends at Henry-Cochran Funeral Home Thursday, November 10, 2022, and Friday, November 11, 2022, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. each night.
