Homer Johnson Jr.

Mr. Homer Edwin Johnson Jr., age 80, of Epworth, passed away January 8, 2020, in PruittHealth Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Blue Ridge. He was born in Benton, Tennessee, to the late Homer E. Johnson Sr. and Stella Talley Johnson. 

Homer was a Registered Nurse for many years. He served as the Director of Nursing at the Blue Ridge Nursing Home for a number of years along with many other nursing positions in Georgia. He later worked for the state of Georgia in nursing home inspections. After many years of nursing, he began teaching at Fannin County High School until his second retirement. Lastly, he went back to nursing home inspections for the state of Georgia. 

In recent years, he worked and will be affectionately remembered for working at McCaysville Drug and Gun. Homer was a talented pianist, who played for many churches, weddings, funerals and nursing homes over the years. Homer was a member of the McCaysville Church of God. He was also very instrumental with the Fannin County Band Booster Club where he volunteered much of his time. Homer was a unique individual, who was loved and will be missed by so many.

Also preceding him in death were two sons, Eddie McCord and Timothy McCord.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Joann McCord of Morganton; granddaughter, Brittany McCord Mayfield and husband Havern of Morganton; step-children and their spouses, Faye Owenby (Ricky Sanford) of Ellijay, Georgia, Carolyn Deyton of Mineral Bluff and Ricky and Donna Landress of Epworth; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Thomas Rice of Calhoun, Georgia; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; the Fannin County band family and a host of many other friends.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 11, 2020, from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Lamb officiating. Music was provided by Mr. Nathan Nicholson. 

Interment was in the Epworth Baptist Church Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Fannin County Band Booster at 360 Rebel Circle Blue Ridge.
