Edith Smith

Edith Hill Smith, age 90, passed away, September 9, 2022, at Stonehenge Senior Living in Blairsville after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Edith was born in Atlanta, July 21, 1932, to the late Fred and Mae Hill.

She is predeceased by sisters Margie, Edna, Dorothy and Mary and by brothers John and Kenneth.

Edith is survived by her husband of 71 years, Winton Smith and sister, Betty (Ben) Turner. Children: Michael Smith, Jane Storms and Joyce Chandler. Four granddaughters: Lindsey (Brendan) Garland, Lauren (TJ) Harbuck, Marissa Storms and Meredith Storms. Four great-grandchildren: Lincoln and Edie Garland and Madison and Scarlett Harbuck. Three sisters-in-law; Dolores Smith, Patricia Smith and Denise Hill.

Edith held a degree from Georgia State University in Visual Arts and belonged to several national watercolor societies. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the coveted Alexander Nepote award from The National Watercolor Society; Western Federation of Watercolor Societies; Southwestern Watercolor Society; Georgia Watercolor Society; Atlanta Artist Center; Georgia Marble Fine Arts Exhibit; Tallahassee Watercolor Society and the Cherokee County Arts Council. She has also been awarded Signature Status in the National Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, and the Georgia Watercolor Society and is a Member of Excellence of the Atlanta Artist Center. She and Winton were both members and supporters of Sawnee Artist Association in Cumming, Georgia where she and Winton had been long time Cumming residents. She was also a proud graduate of Atlanta’s O’Keefe High School.

Edith loved to paint and the art of calligraphy. It brought her much joy teaching others, especially her granddaughters. She was best known for her spunk and quick wit and will be deeply missed by those that knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life gathering was held September 20, 2 p.m. at McDonald & Sons Funeral Home, 150 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, Georgia.
