Tom Striker, age 72, loving husband and father of two daughters, passed away Friday, April 9, 2021, in his home after a long hard-fought battle from the complications of congestive heart failure.
Tom was born in Sacramento, California, November 5, 1948, to George and Mary Striker. Tom received a Master’s Degree in Forestry from the University of Illinois and cherished a career in forestry for 15 years. He then obtained a MBA from Emory University on a Woodruff Scholarship and dedicated 15 years with BellSouth in finance and marketing.
Following a life-long love of birds and birding, Tom and his wife, Sonja, opened the Blue Ridge Bird Seed Company in March of 2003. It was a highlight of his life, where many friendships were forged. He taught seminars, conducted bird walks, taught birding at Young Harris College for years and did two week-long sessions of birding classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School. His customers and students were enthralled with his knowledge and ability to pass forward his birding passion to them.
He also enjoyed two terms as president of the Blue Ridge Business Association. After the sale of the store in 2017, Tom meticulously devoted his time to writing and publishing his book, “Never Bird in the Road.” It is getting rave reviews!
Tom will not only be remembered for his knowledge, but wonderful wit, charm and laid-back personality. He was a trend setter in a quiet way. That he should write a book is a testament to his absolute love of reading. Tom thoroughly enjoyed time with his family and, precious moments with grandkids while birding, playing Yahtzee and fishing. He loved life and people loved him.
Tom and his wife, Sonja, were married June 14, 1970, after meeting at the University of Illinois. They were overjoyed to have a family celebration of their 50th anniversary last year.
He is survived by his wife; his two beloved daughters, Karen and Lynda; three grandchildren, Cameron, Declan and Erica; his sisters, Mary and Ann; and niece, Emma.
A private family Celebration of Life memorial service will be held May 16, in Blue Ridge. Donations may be given to The Nature Conservancy or The American Heart Association.
