George “Rex” Smith, age 73, stepped aside to glory on the morning of December 17, 2021.

Rex was the best friend and husband for the past 36 years of Sonia Smith, of the home. They resided in Mineral Bluff surrounded by many of their family members. Rex was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, July 26, 1948.

Before retirement, he was the owner of Blue Ridge Mountain Screenworks and worked many years in the construction industry remodeling and building houses. Many “ole timers” will remember he had the Blue Ridge Mountain Carriage Service, and along with his grey mare, Sally, he worked weddings and could be found giving carriage rides around the downtown Blue Ridge area on weekends. Rex, known to his family as “Popoo,” will be so missed and never replaced in their hearts. He was a God-made original to his friends and family.

His family included his wife, Sonia Smith; children, Rebecca Smith Swint, Melanie Rogers (James) Boyle, Melinda Rogers (Anthony) Jones, Amanda Griffin and Buddy Guy (Christine) Rogers; sisters, Joan Watkins and Cassie Daniels; grandchildren, Bethany Robinson, Cayland Swint, Alyssa Griffin, Jaron Griffin, Nathan Callihan, Natalie McLaughlin, Emily (Jordan) Gray, Conner Jones, Andrew Jones, Sydnie Jones, Garrett Rogers, and Wyatt Rogers; and great-grandchildren, Miley Jane Gray, Carson William Callihan, and Malachy Liam Callihan.

Funeral services were held at the family home Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at 1 p.m. conducted by good friend his Chris McKee with music by Greg Brooks, Buddy Rogers and Sonny Brooks.

Union Baptist Cemetery, of Mineral Bluff, is his final resting place. Pallbearers were James Boyle, Nathan Callihan, Connor Jones, Garrett Rogers, Andrew Jones and Wyatt Rogers.
