Mr. Elmo Johnson Charles, 85, of Blue Ridge, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021.
He was born July 22, 1935, in Gilmer County, to the late James Hershel Charles and Minnie Lee Langley Charles.
Elmo was a member of Damascus Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War. After serving in the Army, he worked for the Tennessee Chemical Company for many years. Later, he worked as an HVAC technician.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Opal Sue Stiles Charles; and siblings, Buell Charles, Virginia Smith, Georgia Ann Hyde, Kermit Charles and William Charles.
Survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, John Wesley and Jennifer Hope Charles of Hendersonville, Tennessee; granddaughters, Autumn MacKenzie Thomas and Bethany Meagan Charles; siblings, Jewel Charles and Claudavee Charles; sister-in-law, Carol Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at 1 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Ray Queen officiating. Interment will follow in the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Brian Contardi officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Jackie Morgan, Dink Lanning, Terry Verner, Trevor Jordan, Mark Young and Drew Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Beach, Randy Beach, Wayne Stover, Alan Chancey, and James Lanning. The family will visit with friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, masks will be required during the visitation and funeral.
