Elizabeth Martin Hunt, 92, was called home Saturday, November 13, 2021.

Born in 1929, Elizabeth was the only daughter of Edward Martin, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jane Dorough Martin, of Atlanta. After Edward’s death, Jane brought young Elizabeth back to Atlanta, where she would grow up surrounded by family. Lisbé, as she was affectionately called, attended E. Rivers Elementary and Girls High in Atlanta before moving to Danville, Virginia, to complete high school and begin college at Stratford Hall.

While on a weekend visit to Atlanta, Elizabeth met and fell in love with Douglas Hunt, of Calhoun, Georgia. They married New Year’s Day in 1949, and began raising their family of four – Chuck, Richard, Jane and Montyne – living in Dalton, Georgia, LaFayette, Georgia, and Calhoun, Georgia. Whether she was setting up Head Start programs in rural North Georgia communities, substitute teaching at her children’s schools or working for the Red Cross, Elizabeth found multiple ways to help others in her community.

Elizabeth moved back to Atlanta in 1979, where she continued to work until 1997, when she retired to Blue Ridge and fulfilled a lifelong dream of living at the lake. Here she found a welcoming community of friends and rewarding volunteer opportunities. Her cabin on the lake was always full of friends, dogs and music. Anyone who knows Elizabeth knows how beautifully she played the piano. You could often find her playing at her church, the theatre or on the occasional cruise ship.

Elizabeth gave freely of her time and talents. She served many years as a Pink Lady at Fannin County Hospital and worked tirelessly for several organizations she believed in, including Habitat for Humanity, the Blue Ridge Community Theater, Friends of the Library and others.

Her family is grateful for the compassion and care Elizabeth received from the staff at Blue Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care, where she lived for the last two years.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her children, Chuck Hunt (Elsa), of Atlanta, Richard Hunt (Angela), of Half Moon Bay, California, Jane Watkins, of Woodstock, Georgia, and Montyne Morris (Jeff), of Marietta, Georgia; her grandchildren, David, Cristina, Matthew, Sara, Blake, Holland, Douglas, Daniel, Sarah and Will; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will remember and celebrate Elizabeth’s life at Blue Ridge United Methodist Church Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception for friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Ridge United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society of Blue Ridge or Friends of the Library.
