Dr. Donald “Don” Karel Fronek, age 83, of Woodpecker Ridge, Blairsville, Georgia, passed away, Wednesday, May 12, 2021, in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center of Gainesville, Georgia. 

Don was born July 11, 1937, in Sunnyside, Washington, to the late Elmer Fronek and Irene Young Fronek. Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lowell Fronek.

Survivors include his loving wife, Elise Fronek of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Karen Fronek of Medford, Oregon; daughter, Maureen Fronek of Tijeras, New Mexico; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Shannon Mayer of Madison, Alabama, and Jonathan and Andrea Mayer of Emerald Hills, California; eight grandchildren, Jared Fronek, Nicholas Fronek, Peyton Fronek, Joshua Fronek, Emma Fronek McEwen, Delaney Mayer, Annie Mayer and Lyla Mayer; and several great-grandchildren.

Don was a proud member of both the Union County and Fannin County Ham Radio Clubs. During his career as a professor, he taught at several universities including the University of Alabama at Huntsville, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Louisiana Technical University, the University of Nevada in Reno and the University of New Mexico. In his career as an electrical engineer, he worked with companies in support of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center (MSIC) in Huntsville, Alabama.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The News Literacy Project (NLP) in Don’s memory.
