Frank Wood was appointed district attorney for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit by Governor Brian Kemp Friday, March 1, and was sworn into office the same day.
Wood was in court in Gilmer County Friday morning when he received a phone call from the governor telling him of the appointment. He has served as acting district attorney since B. Alison Sosebee was appointed as a Superior Court judge for the circuit in January.
The executive order issued by Kemp and naming Wood was sent to the Secretary of State and then to Chief Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver who administered the oath of office to Wood Friday afternoon.
Kemp was to hold a ceremonial swearing in for Wood Monday in Atlanta.
“I’m humbled and honored by the appointment. It allows me to continue the work I have been doing,” Wood said.
Wood became acting district attorney when Sosebee took her judge’s oath January 12, 2024.
Wood had served as chief assistant district attorney for the circuit since January 2022 when his responsibilities as an assistant district attorney were expanded to include Gilmer and Pickens counties.
Wood’s appointment by the governor is effective until December 31, 2024.
Wood said he will qualify to run for a full, four year term in the 2024 election. He will qualify with the Republican Party at the state capitol this week.
The election winner’s term begins January 1, 2025.
