Douglas Harper, 41, is dead and William Joseph Woods, 58, of 1321 Old Epworth Road, Epworth, is charged with his murder. Harper was also of Epworth.
Fannin County deputies were dispatched to a shots fired call in the 1300 block of Old Epworth Road Thursday, October 9, at about 7:15 p.m., according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
When deputies and McCaysville police officers arrived, Harper was found dead in the front yard of the home from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim had been shot with a 9mm handgun inside the 1321 Old Epworth Road residence, according to an arrest warrant for Woods.
Woods was located at the scene, identified as the shooter, and placed under arrest, the GBI said.
According to warrants taken by the GBI, Woods is charged with four felonies; Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm/Knife During Commission of a Crime. He remains held in the Fannin County Jail without bond.
An autopsy will be conducted on Harper’s body by the GBI Crime Lab.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, the statement said.
The sheriff’s office requested the GBI assist with the investigation.
