Girls heading to Sweet 16
The Fannin County Lady Rebels soccer team secured their spot in the Sweet 16 after a 9-0 victory over Haralson County.
The Lady Rebels started off quick with a goal by Mazie Goble, assisted by Madison Ponton just three minutes into the game. Goble’s goal was accompanied by a goal scored by Emma Richardson, assisted by Annabel Lillard in the first half. Halftime score being 2-0.
As the half began, the Lady Rebels offense came to life with three more goals added in under five minutes. Hannah Sosebee started the run with a goal scored just under the two minute mark. Not even a full minute later, Goble earned another goal for herself tallying the score to 4-0. Goble, then, assisted Stephanie Kirk to a goal quickly after.
Lillard picked up a goal of her own with an assist by fellow senior Taylor Poland. Goble is credited with another goal after the ball ricocheted off a Haralson County player and found the back of the net for Fannin.
Kirk shot and scored another goal with just over seven minutes left in the game. Lillard scored the last goal of the game with four minutes and 23 seconds left in the game leaving the total at 9-0.
For the game, the Lady Rebels tallied 30 steals and three saves. Sosebee led the team with five steals, followed by Hannah McSwain, Kinsley Sullivan and Aaliyah Green with four each.
Both Lillard and Poton earned three steals. Poland along with Karmah Eaton added four steals to the total with two each.
Goble, Richardson and Kirk all had one defensive steal. Senior goalkeeper Rachael Jessen added three saves keeping Haralson scoreless.
The Lady Rebels are now 14 and one and will host the second round of the state playoff at home Wednesday, April 20.
“We are so excited to be able to host these games. We’ve all worked so hard to get where we are,” the FHCS Lady Rebels Seniors soccer players said at their Monday, April 18 practice.
