Editorial: ... But hope vanishes with meeting schedule

Just when it appeared Blue Ridge City Council members wanted to be sure annexation was done the right way, with plenty of citizen input, it looks like they are interested in rushing it through.

The city is running an advertisement this week announcing a Town Hall meeting June 1 so citizens can voice their concerns, approval or disapproval. This gives absolutely no preparation time for citizens to do any real research, throughly develop their thoughts, make their plans and attend.

Also, the city will practice social distancing, thus limiting attendance and in turn public input.

This quick meeting is obviously an attempt to try to push annexation through the upcoming state legislative session. And part of that attempt is to gag the public.

And what about the county commissioners? They have said “no” already. Are they not expected to have time to research any proposal?

This is not a decision to be rushed, but the city seems to think so – for some reason.
