Honors: Runners shine in mountain competition
Lindsey Holloway placed first and set a school record, Brady Smith received the Warrior Award, and Karli Sams met the Milesplit Bronze Level Stardard. These were among the honors the Fannin County High School Cross Country teams brought home from the Mountain Invitational at Unicoi State Park Thursday, October 3.
Holloway, who is a senior this year, turned in a 5K time of 19:13 to claim first place in the varsity girls race and set the new FCHS record.
The Warrior Award that went to Smith honored the competitor who showed the most bravery and courage throughout the races of the day. Smith is also a senior.
Sams met the Milesplit Bronze Level Starndard for the second time this year by turning in a time of 20:55. The time was also good enough for a seventh place finish overall in the varsity girls race for the FCHS junior.
In addition to these individual honors, a trio of Fannin County teams left their marks on the event.
The girls team, which includes Holloway, Sams, Kensley Pickelsimer, Lana Hicks, Annaleigh Cheatham, and Claire Saxon, came in fifth place out of over 20 teams.
The boys team of Rylin Davis, Hudson Lynch, Austin Prieto, Gage Bryan, Joe DiBenedetto, Henry Schueneman, and Matthew Ponton placed 13th out of over 20 teams.
The junior varsity boys team of Brady Smith, Brodey Angel, Aiden Jones, Gavin Davis, Kevin Cruz, Kaden Majors, and Jaxson Bittner placed 9th.
Next on the schedule for the cross country runners is the Pickens & Grinnin’ Invitational Friday, October 11.
