Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it

Try pineapples on your pizza. No, really, it’s delicious. I’ve heard this debate for quite some time, and I feel that anyone who turns their nose up to the notion is brainwashed.

It’s no secret that our beliefs are influenced by those around us. Whether it be our family members, friends or social media, they play a part in our own thoughts.

Every now and then, one might stumble across some real wisdom on social media. I saw a post on Facebook at some point in the past year saying “Pineapple on pizza isn’t even bad. Most of y’all hate it because social media tells you to.”

Many, especially those younger than myself, get caught up in the trends we see on the internet and try to implement them despite knowing all the facts.

Not everything you read on the internet is true! Contemporary society plays a dangerous game with social media.

When I was a freshman in high school, there was a thing called the “Kylie Jenner lip challenge.” If you aren’t familiar with her, she’s part of the famous Kardashian crew, and is known for getting her lips injected to make them fuller.

Kylie started a trend, making big lips attractive, so adolescent girls sought the look as well. They would get a glass or what have you and place it around their lips and suck as hard as they could for an amount of time. When removing their lips from the glass, their lips were red and swollen and usually left a ring around their mouth.

Why people thought this was okay is beyond me. In the end, some were left with scarring and disfigurement all because of one person’s preferences.

I’m not saying that big lips aren’t attractive. I’m not saying they are either. My point is that we, as a society, shouldn’t allow others to make decisions for us.

We need to do the work, go the extra mile, to discover what it is we like for ourselves. Not for anyone else. There’s a saying that goes, “Believe half of what you see and nothing you hear.” There is REAL wisdom behind that.

Next time you read about some big time celeb doing a specific diet, research it before trying it yourself. Like I said in my last column, to each it their own, and just because something works for one person doesn’t mean it’ll work for you.

A big portion of life is about making your own experiences. People forget that. Just because someone told you something is gross doesn’t make it gross until you try it yourself. If you don’t do things yourself you may miss out on more than just a delicious pizza, but you can trust me when I say it is in everyone’s best interest to try pineapple on your pizza, but if after trying you still think it belongs in the trash, kudos to you for going that extra mile to see for yourself.

(P.S. I like my pizza with pepperoni, pineapple and jalapeño.)
