The Copper Basin Cougars put on a 46-25 thumping of district rival the Lookout Valley Yellow Jackets.
The Cougars received the ball to start the game at their own 34-yard line.
Joe Boggs, Sebastian Baliles and Jonathan Johnson helped move Copper Basin down the field and into Yellow Jackets territory before quarterback Boggs kept the ball from about 11 yards out to find the end zone for a touchdown.
Boggs was able to find the endzone again on the two-point conversion to lead Lookout Valley 8-0 in the first quarter.
The Cougars attempted an onside kick and Johnathan Johnson sped past the Yellow Jackets to recover it and give the ball back to Copper Basin.
Copper Basin could not convert though as they punted back to Lookout Valley. The Yellow Jackets started on their own 28 yard line.
Lookout Valley’s drive was plagued by penalties and big plays from Kade Foster and Addison Hook to force the Yellow Jackets to punt.
Baliles returned the ball to the Cougars’ 30-yard line as Boggs and the offense set up shop.
After a Yellow Jacket penalty, the Cougars started at the 50 yard line and it just took one play as Baliles took a 50-yard run to the house for a touchdown.
Joe Boggs punched in the two-point conversion to extend the Cougars lead 16-0.
That score did not last long as the Yellow Jacket sreturned the Cougar kickoff back to the two yard line and a touchdown shortly after. The extra point was good as Lookout Valley trailed the Cougars 16-7.
Zack Beach recovered Lookout Valley’s onside kick to give the Cougars the ball at their own 48-yard line.
Boggs loaded up and hit Johnson on a big pass to put the Cougars at the Yellow Jacket’s 19-yard line.
Baliles later muscled his way into the endzone for another Cougar touchdown. Boggs hit Cade Dean on a nice pass to convert the two-point conversion and give the Cougars a 24-7 lead to end the first quarter.
Cruz Soto and Jake Postell made some big stops to force a fourth down as Lookout Valley elected to go for it.
Foster was able to make the tackle and give the Cougars the ball back at their own seven yard line.Copper Basin marched down the field but could not convert before the end of the second quarter as Copper Basin led 24-7 to take the game to halftime.
Copper Basin was able to score one more touchdown before the Yellow Jackets went on a two touchdown run to slice the Cougar lead 30-25.
Boggs was able to lead the Cougars down the field and force his way into the endzone from about seven yards out and after the good two-point conversion, the Cougars led 38-25.
The Cougars scored one more time in the game to seal it as Baliles ran it to the end zone from about 21 yards out and after the good extra point, the Cougars led 46-25, where the game remained until the final buzzer as the Cougars won their second district game of the year.
Hook had a big game, finishing with three sacks. Boggs had 12 tackles on defense and two tackles for losses.
Offensively, the Cougars racked up 470 total yards of offense. Boggs threw for 153 yards, while running for 105 yards.Baliles would not be denied on the ground as he tallied 180 rushing yards.
Johnson led the Cougars in receiving yards with 50, while Cadan Williams was on his heels with 48 yards. Dean had 30 yards receiving, and Balilies had 28 yards.
With the win, the Cougars are now 2-1 in district play. Copper Basin will take on Meigs County Friday, October 8, at Meigs County. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
