Literacy event to have superhero theme

Fannin County students, families and community members are invited to immerse themselves in the world of comics, graphic novels, super heroes and super villains at Fannin County High School’s Superhero Literacy Night Thursday, February 20 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the school’s campus.

Those who attend will have a variety of activities to participate in, including designing a comic or graphic novel in the Art room, using STEM practices to create “radioactive slime” in the Chemistry Lab, explore an escape room in the Writing Center, enjoy dramatic readings and participate in coding projects in the school’s transformed media center, known for the night as the “Bat Cave,” participate in a book walk, and make memories in the photo booth.

The county’s “local superheroes” will also make an appearance during the event.

“The Fannin County School System is proud to use this night to celebrate our ‘Local Superheroes,’ including Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Firefighters, Police Officers, and heroes of all kinds,” Director of Instructional Services & Policy Sarah Welch said. “Please join us this night and allow us to recognize you and to celebrate your contributions to our community! If you are a ‘local superhero,’ please stop by the main entrance table so that we can recognize you.”

Following the interactive literacy event, the Swan Drive-In Theatre will host a showing of “Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse”, which is rated PG, at 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $5 per ticket and children ages five and under can get in for free.

“Steve and Kathy Setser at the local Swan Drive-in are graciously donating all ticket proceeds to funding future Fannin County literacy events and/or projects,” Welch said. “Over the past three years, they have been unfailing supporters of our endeavors to increase literacy-focused opportunities for Fannin County families and children.”

Students at each of Fannin County school have been given the opportunity to enter their individual art work into a “Design your own Superhero/Super villain” contest.

The contest includes four grade sections; Pre-K through 2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. While the requirements for each section are different, each contestant has to develop an origin story for their hero or villain.

Welch said, “A winner will be selected by public vote in each category, and that winner will receive an awesome prize! If your child is interested, please have them complete and submit their entry form and original art work to their school’s office by the end of the day (3:00 p.m.) on Tuesday, February 18.”

During the event, the Fannin County Public Library will host a parent resource room, along with parent jeopardy featuring prizes and the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association will also have a representative that night. The University of North Georgia Scholars Program students will also work across the event as part of their service learning project for the year.
