Blue Ridge officials have decided the cannery will not open this year.
City Administrator Eric Soroka said last week an inventory of the equipment determined “it has served its useful life.” He said he spoke with several individuals who have used and operated the facility for years to help determine the equipment’s condition.
Soroka said the city is looking at a plan to open the cannery sometime in the future.
The Fannin County School System had operated the cannery for the last several years under an agreement with the city.
However, earlier this year, the school board agreed to return the cannery to the city since the facility was no longer needed as part of the agriculture education program.
