Down the Rabbit Hole

Theater presents “Alice in Wonderland”

Be swept away into another world with the Blue Ridge Community Theater’s latest play, “Alice in Wonderland.”

The play began on January 24 and will continue through February 9. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Folks may recall the tale of the iconic childhood story. The playbill invites spectators to follow Alice through the looking glass and into wonderland – a delightful but particularly peculiar place.

Nothing is too far fetched. Production Manager Joseph Nicolella said, “doorknobs speak, flowers sing, cats vanish, soldiers paint roses and many celebrate their ‘un-birthday’ almost everyday of the year!”

He said the play is closely based on the “beloved” childrens books by Lewis Carroll, following Alice’s adventure as she meets such unusual characters as the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, and so many more.

Can Alice navigate her way through Wonderland and find her way back home, or will she be stuck in this mad land forever? “You’ll have to come join the madness to find out,” said Nicolella.

A number of local talent was recruited to design and create the elaborate sets to help tell the story of “Alice.” Larry Minor was one of the local artists who contributed his time and talent to build the magical land of Wonderland.

Of the opportunity to help, Minor said, “I am honored BRCT asked me to volunteer my talents and hand paint three backdrops for the current production,” Minor said. “After having retired to Blue Ridge I am able to utilize my talents and let imagery emotionally move the viewer. With two college degrees training me in the visual arts, I am able to express myself in a grandeur style without harsh critics. I am so pleased so many people appreciate the arts in Blue Ridge.”

“Alice in Wonderland” is rated PG, is written by LeGallienne & Friebus and is directed by Sarah Shelton. Call the box office at 706- 632-9191 or visit blueridgecommunitytheater.com for tickets.
