Fannin County School System Director of Instructional Technology Heather Finley and Director of Instructional Services & Policy Sarah Welch have created a new curriculum called Curriculum Online Learning Day (COLD) for days the school system experiences inclement weather and is forced to close.
“Because we know it gets cold outside and it has been cold outside and we want to be prepared when that happens. Mrs. Finley and I have worked together to try to develop an approach in the system in Fannin County to let the learning continue even if inclement weather comes and we are unable to be here,” Welch said.
The first four inclement weather days are “forgiven” student days. However, faculty/staff will make up the hours following established procedures. Days five through eight will be considered COLD days where students, faculty and staff are responsible for the time.
During COLD days, students in Pre-K through fifth grade will complete resource packets that consist of no more than 90 minutes worth of work. 6th through 12th grade students will be responsible for online assignments that total no more than two hours worth of work.
All students will have three days to complete the assignments upon their return to school.
“Nobody would be penalized or anything like that in the event they lost power,” Welch said.
Administrators will be expected to maintain their office hours and ensure communication of inclement weather expectations to all local school stakeholders during COLD days. Teachers are also expected to hold office hours and be available by email.
“We hope it will be a benefit to our families and their children,” Welch said.
