Toys for Tots served over 900

Generous community support is being credited for the successful efforts of the 2023 Toys for Tots campaign.

Again this year, the Marine Corps League Detachment #1438 of Blue Ridge spearheaded the effort.

Over 900 children were served and over 300 requests for assistance were fulfilled by league members and a host of volunteers representing many different civic groups.

Campaign Coordinator Jim Brumbelow said, “The estimated value of the toys distributed is over $91,000. This would not be possible without the very generous support of our community.”

Significant fundraisers included the Stuff the Truck event at Walmart and Brews and Brats at Grumpy Old Men Brewing the Friday after Thanksgiving, followed by the Santa Train Weekend. Brumbelow expressed his gratitude to Grumpy Old Men Brewing for the monetary contribution they made after the event they hosted.

He also thanked the Kiwanis Club of Blue Ridge for their significant contribution to the campaign.

Money donated through the campaigns was used to purchase items where there was a lack of toy donations.

Bicycles were the most purchased items, but not every request could be filled. Larger 24 inch and 26 inch bikes were the biggest shortfall this Christmas.

The campaign kicked off October 20 with the placement of over 50 toy collection boxes and contribution jars spread about through local businesses and restaurants throughout the county. Distribution took place December 15 and 16 at Fannin County Family Connection.

The Marine Toys for Tots is one of the most well-known and successful toy drives nationwide. Each Christmas, the programs bring the joy of Christmas and a beacon of hope to America’s disadvantaged children, league spokesman Dale Greene said.

Marine Toys for Tots has distributed over 652 million toys to 291 million deserving children throughout the nation.

The Blue Ridge Marine Corps detachment has already begun planning for the 2024 campaign. Any individuals or civic groups who want to be involved should contact Coordinator Jim Brumbelow through the Toys for Tots website at www.ToysforTots.org.
