Summer meals to start June 1

Faith Presbyterian Church, Fannin County Family Connection, Snack in a Backpack, Temple Baptist Church and St. Luke’s Anglican Episcopal Church have joined together once again in order to provide a free Summer Meal Program for Fannin County children, ages 17 and under, who are in need.

Since a “large percentage” of children in the county are eligible for free and reduced-cost meals during the school year, the goal of the 2021 Summer Meal Program is to provide healthy and nutritious meals to these children during the summer to fill the gap between school years.

“Due to the generosity of our community, we are in a good position to begin the shelf stable meals distribution; however, donations are very welcome and are needed to provide bread and fresh produce for the families with children,” officials with the program said.

Those wishing to donate can do so online at www.snackinabackpack.com.

The program will provide 800 deliveries a week during the 8-week summer break period, beginning June 3.

These meals will be delivered to 12 site-specific locations within the county Mondays and Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to noon, June 3 to July 22, rain or shine. Delivery locations will include:

•Brooks Summit Apartments;

•Blue Ridge Housing Authority (both sites);

•Highway 5 Trailer Parks;

•LaVista Apartments;

•Laurelwood Apartments;

•North Court Apartments;

•Jones Street Apartments & Park;

•Brookstone Apartments;

•Barry Street Apartments;

•McCaysville Housing; and,

•Mineral Springs Apartments.

Those in East Fannin County can pick up meals at East Fannin Elementary School on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
