Special Olympics bowlers show off plenty of smiles

One time every year Fannin Lanes in Blue Ridge glows with the smiles of children and adults alike when the Special Olympics bowling outing visits.

Special Olympics athletes from all five Fannin County schools, Mineral Springs Center and Mountain Area Christian Academy filled Fannin Lanes for a morning of fun Friday, February 23.

Some 84 athletes ranging in age from four years old and on into their 60s were joined by 10 volunteers and 33 staff members.

Jessica Ramirez said, “I am always blown away by the community support that shows up for our athletes. The bowling alley was more than generous with their time and staff, the school system provided transportation to and from the event and school/district administration took the time to stop by to cheer on the athletes.

“Community members from the Chamber of Commerce showed up to volunteer as well,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez is a Special Education teacher at East Fannin who coordinates Special Olympics events.
