Alison Sosebee has been appointed by Governor Brian Kemp as the new Superior Court Judge for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit.
She fills the vacancy created by the unexpected passing of Judge John Worcester.
Sosebee said, “I am humbled and grateful to Governor Brian Kemp for this opportunity, and to be able to serve the citizens of the Appalachian Judicial Circuit in this capacity.”
Sosebee also praised Worcester for his work. “Judge Worcester’s unexpected passing was a great loss as he had faithfully served this circuit for several years. It is an honor and privilege to succeed John Worcester following his tenure as Superior Court judge,” she said. Worcester passed away in August 2023.
Learning of Sosebee’s appointment, Chief Assistant District Attorney Frank Wood said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations on her appointment as a judge. Her dedication and commitment to upholding justice have been truly inspiring, and I have no doubt that she will continue to serve with the same integrity and wisdom in her new role.”
Sosebee has served the judicial circuit, which includes Fannin, Gilmer and Pickens counties, as district attorney since 2013.
Since earning her bachelor’s and Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia, the new superior court judge previously was a sole practitioner in Blue Ridge and an associate in the law office of George W. Weaver.
Sosebee also served as juvenile judge pro tem for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit, city attorney for both Ellijay and McCaysville, and judge pro tem for Ellijay Municipal Court.
She served as chairwoman of the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force Control Board, and is a member of the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad Control Board, the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office Control Board and the District Attorney’s Association of Georgia.
Sosebee is a member of Lebanon Baptist Church, the Fannin County High School Quarterback Club and a sponsor of the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame and Appalachian Children’s Center.
Garrison Douglas, Kemp’s press secretary, said last Thursday that no date has been set for Sosebee’s swearing ceremony.
She will assume her new office immediately once she takes her new oath.
Once that happens, Wood will become acting district attorney for the judicial circuit.
