Snack packing more meals for children

Snack in a Backpack is still packing meals for Fannin County children during the COVID-19 pandemic and has added safety procedures to protect children and volunteers.

Executive Director Debby Beck said, “The school meals program is serving hundreds of students a cold breakfast and lunch each day. On Friday, the Snack in a Backpack weekend bags are given out with the meals. Remember, our meal bags actually have 4 meals plus snacks in each.”

Beck said that the non-profit is actually serving more students than usual at this time. While they typically prepare 400 bags a week, they are currently packing between 500 and 600.

“Snack will need more food inventory,” she said. “We are fortunate to have a secure storage bay and we were prepared to have enough food to last through the end of the school year, but at this rate we will need to order more food soon. We usually keep a 4 to 6 week supply of shelf stable milk, juice, cans of protein rich meat, cereals, oatmeal and lots of nutrient rich granola and fruit bars on hand.”

The Marine Corps League Lake Blue Ridge Detachment 1438 members recently delivered 600 meals to three Fannin County elementary schools for distribution Thursday, April 2.

“It’s what we have always done as Marines, step up and assist folks when there is a need,” Vice Commandant of the League Chuck Clark said. “We are proud to do it as Marines, and especially proud to serve our own community.”

Snack in a Backpack is still looking for donations to continue serving Fannin County children in need. Those able to make a donation to Snack in a Backpack can do so at https://donorbox.org/snackinabackpack-org.
