Snack: Need is greater
An increased demand to feed Fannin County’s hungry children has come with the beginning of the school year.
Debby Beck said last week that Snack in a Backpack is serving 150 more students this year than last as well as providing more teacher snack boxes than ever before.
Beck, executive director of Snack, said, “To meet the demand, we will need the community’s continued support.”
“We rarely close our doors. Snack in a Backpack provides food to hungry children at least 48 out of the 52 weeks in a year.
“That means fundraising and food purchases never stop. Donations of all sizes are needed and are deeply appreciated,” Beck said.
There are several ways to help besides making monetary donations.
Help is needed:
•To unload pallets of food when they arrive Tuesday mornings from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank;
•To pack meal bags and teacher snacks Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m.; and,
•To deliver food to local schools once a month, either Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.
In addition, Snack in a Backpack is conducting a Raisin Drive throughout September.
“Raisins are a staple item in our teacher snack boxes and among children with allergies. However, they are one of the hardest items for us to purchase in bulk,” Beck said.
Any brand of single serve raisins in one ounce boxes is needed.
Beck encourages anyone willing to rally family, friends, neighbors or church members to collect raisins to contact Snack. Donations can be dropped off Tuesdays or Wednesdays between noon and 2 p.m. at Snack, 2460 East First Street, in the lower parking lot behind Pete’s Place in Blue Ridge.
