School board recognizes accomplishments

The accomplishments of the students involved in several Fannin County High School clubs were recognized during the Board of Education’s meeting Thursday, April 10.

The high school’s TSA (Technology Student Association) chapter has several members headed to national competition: Alexis Howe, William Hood, James Burrell, Fox Sharp, Castle Barnett and Conner Kyle.

During the TEAMS competition at Georgia Tech in January, Sharp, Kyle and Barnett earned third place.

At the State Leadership Conference, Sharp was a finalist for Digital Photography Portfolio; Barnett and Kyle made top 10 for Technology Problem Solving.

Kyle was also nominated to run for a state officer position.

The high school’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members were celebrated for many initiatives:

Volunteering at Piedmont Hospital’s Breast Cancer Awareness event in October, hosting a clothing and food drive for those affected by Hurricane Helene, organizing and serving at the annual Veterans Day Breakfast, assisting in serving Thanksgiving meals within the school system;

Cooking a meal for families staying at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House and competing in many different competitions.

HOSA members were also recognized for their efforts with two blood drives at the school as well as attending the state’s HOSA Fall Rally at Six Flags, Fall Leadership Conference in Athens and Regional Competition and State Leadership Conference and Competition.

Jaclyn Cracknell placed fifth in Pathophysiology; Cameryn Tkacsik earned top 10 in Clinical Nursing; and, Cassidy Walden and Bailey Gaddy made top 10 in Mental Health Promotion

High School FFA members Skylar Gazaway, Abigail McFarland and James Burrell were present to be recognized.

McFarland is headed to state for Sheep Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency. She competed Thursday, April 24, at the 97th Georgia State FFA Convention in Macon and received her State Degree at the convention.

She also placed eighth in two separate shows at the North American International Livestock Exhibition for showing sheep.

McFarland and Claire Wheeler placed second in the Junior Sheep Herdsman at the Georgia National Fair.

Faith Patterson, Skylar Gazaway, and McFarland placed third in the Junior Goat Herdsman competition at the Georgia National Fair.

Gazaway placed sixth in the Floral Design CDE competition.

Livestock exhibitors Patterson, Wheeler, Burrell and McFarland placed either top five or 10 in their division at both state and national levels.

Roy Green placed fifth in Tractor Operations and Maintenance CDE; Jacob Williams placed second in Employability Skills; the Poultry Evaluation team, involving Jason Allen, Sarah Brawley, Burrell, Gabby Nichols and Nick Tutterrow placed tenth.

Skills USA members’ region accomplishments are as follows: Bailee Stiles Welding, first place; Eli Queen, Cohutta Ross and Trenten Flowers, Welding Fabrication, first place;

Brady Coleman, Cooper Hilliard, Reid Norton and Eli Plush, TeamsWorks, first; Mason Ramey, Masonry, second; Nehemiah Watkins, Masonry, third; Bryer Duvall, Cabinetmaking, second; Harlson Nelson, First Aid and CPR, second;

Mason Sandefur, Automotive Service Technology, first; and, Brayden Walton, Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair, first.

Additionally, Stiles and Trenten Flowers came in first for the XcelFab Team Competition, and River Stuart and Wyatt Flowers came in second.

Castle Barnett placed third in Blueprint Reading; Miles Bowen came in first for Tool Recognition; and, James Taylor received third in Brake Parts Identification.

At the Polk Welding Expo, River Stuart earned second place for Pipe Welding. Eli Queen received third place in Stainless Steel Tig Pipe; and, Stiles came in second in Manufacturing Mig.

Trenten Flowers placed first in Structural Welding and earned a credential as an AWS Certified Welder as a freshman and was one of two freshmen at the competition.
