School board hears Milestones test results

The 2021 end-of-year Georgia Milestones assessment results for the Fannin County School System were presented to the board during the Fannin County Board of Education regular meeting Thursday, September 9, by Lucas Roof, the system’s director of Learning and Achievement.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System tests are designed to provide information about how well students are mastering the state-adopted content standards in the core content areas of English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies.

The board was presented with percentage scores for levels proficient and distinguished for Fannin County elementary, middle and high schools compared to overall Georgia state results.

Proficient learners demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at a particular grade level or course of learning, meaning the students are prepared for the next grade level or course and are on track for college and career readiness.

Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level or course of learning, meaning the students are well prepared for the next grade level or course and are well prepared for college and career readiness.

Fannin County elementary schools proficient and distinguished learners milestones tests results compared to Georgia state were as follows:

•Third grade ELA, 30%   vs. state 36%;

•Third grade math, 52% vs. state 38%;

•Fourth grade ELA, 32% vs. state 37%;

•Fourth grade math, 43% vs. state 43%; and,

•Fifth grade ELA, 32% vs. state 39%;

Fifth grade math, 34% vs. state 35%; and,

•Fifth grade science, 31% vs. state 38%.

Fannin County Middle School proficient and distinguished learners milestones tests results compared to Georgia state were as follows:

•Sixth grade ELA, 44% vs. state 42%;

•Sixth grade math, 38% vs. state 30%;

•Seventh grade ELA, 35% vs. state 39%;

•Seventh grade math, 38% vs. state 36%;

•Eighth grade ELA, 45% vs. state 41%;

•Eighth grade math, 44% vs. state 32%;

•Eighth grade science, 22% vs. state 27%; and,

•Eighth grade social studies, 34% vs. state 35%.

And, Fannin County High School proficient and distinguished learners milestones tests results compared to Georgia state were as follows:

•U.S. History, 42% vs. state 30%;

•American Literature, 42% vs. state 28%;

•Biology, 34% vs. state 42%;

•Algebra I, 34% vs. state 31%; and,

•Physical Science, 85% vs. state 53%.

It is important to remember that Georgia students were not given the milestones exams at the end of the 2020 school year due to COVID-19, and the 2021 results were also impacted in that they show some level of the learning loss that students in Georgia, and all over the country, have suffered because of the pandemic, Dr. Michael Gwatney, school superintendent, said.
