Qualifying ends with 7 of 12 offices opposed

Fannin seats for chairman, Post One, attract most candidates

Only 7 of 12 Fannin County races during the 2020 election cycle will give voters a choice of candidates as the result of last week’s election qualifying.

When the qualifying deadline ended at noon Friday, March 6, races for Fannin County commission chairman, Post One commissioner, coroner, surveyor, and three school board seats had opposing candidates.

Only one candidate each had qualified for sheriff, clerk of court, chief magistrate judge, probate judge and tax commissioner. 

Incumbent Stan Helton, Vincent Davis, James “Jamie” Hensley, and Bill Simonds qualified to run for county commission chairman.

Debra Holcomb, Dixie L. Carter, Johnny Scearce, and Susan Hayes qualified to run for Post One commissioner.

Sheriff Dane Kirby, Clerk of Court Dana Chastain, Chief Magistrate Judge Brian Jones and Probate Judge Scott Kiker will run unopposed for their current positions.

Rita Newton will run unopposed for tax commissioner.

William Lake “Billy” Standridge Jr., will challenge incumbent Becky Callahan for the position of county coroner.

Sam Walker will challenge incumbent Shelly Bishop for county surveyor.

Greg Staffins will run against Terry Bramlett for Bramlett’s seat on the Fannin County Board of Education.

Lewis DeWeese will seek re-election, while Kathy Smyth and Lorraine Panter will also run for his seat on the Board of Education.

Incumbent Chad Galloway will be challenged by Theresa “TC” Dillard for his seat on the Board of Education.

The primary election will take place Tuesday, May 19 and those who wish to vote must be registered to do so by Monday, April 20.
