Marine Corps League overcomes obstacles in Toys for Tots success

Members of Marine Corps League Detachment 1438 wrapped up another successful Toys for Tots campaign at the end of last year, however, COVID-19 and an increased need in the community made for an entirely different year for the organization.

As the season kicked off in October, campaign organizers quickly realized they would need to meet a much higher need than years past while simultaneously taking a hit in donations due to the inability to host as many fundraisers during the pandemic.

They also had to completely re-work the toy collection and distribution processes to account for social distancing and sanitizing practices.

While the need and challenges were high, they met the mark, and the organization collected and distributed 5,101 toys to 1,086 children in the community for the 2020 year.

“We did have added expenses this year that we just never had before because of COVID-19,” Toys for Tots Coordinator Cheryl Jordan said.

One of the biggest expenses were the large metal storage containers used to hold toys as they moved through the collection process, which saw extra sanitizing this year.

“We just went the extra step to help make sure people felt safe and comfortable,” Jordan said.

Another successful campaign would not have been possible without the help of several volunteers in the community, Jordan said.

“The volunteers were phenomenal this year,” she said. “We are very thankful for each of them.”

The storage units and the toys were kept at Fannin County Family Connection, a facility the league was able to operate out of again this year. Jordan described the employees at Family Connection and the ability to use the facility as a “true blessing.”

According to Jordan, 98% of the toys collected stay in Fannin County through the Toys for Tots program, but they are also used year-round to provide toys, books and other items for organizations including, but not limited to, Snack in a Backpack, Appalachian Court Appointed Special Advocacy (CASA) and the Kid’s Corner in Ellijay, Georgia.
