March 24 election to coincide with May 19 primary

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has postponed March 24th’s Presidential Primary Election to coincide with May 19th’s General Primary in light of the public health emergency posed by COVID-19.

“Events are moving rapidly and my highest priority is protecting the health of our poll workers, their families, and the community at large,” Raffensperger said.

Before the election was postponed, Fannin County saw 242 republicans and 173 democrats take advantage of early voting, while 95 republicans and 51 democrats mailed in ballots.

“If someone has received a ballot in the mail, they can still return it and it will be counted,” Fannin County Elections Supervisor Mary Ann Conner said. “All ballots that have been voted will be counted on May 19, 2020.”

The voters who had already voted will only receive the General Primary ballot when they vote in the General Primary. All other voters will receive a ballot with both the General Primary and Presidential Preference Primary candidates.

Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston agreed with Raffensperger’s decision, stating, “I support Secretary Raffensperger’s decision to delay the presidential preference primary and other March elections until May. This will ensure an orderly and safe elections process and is in the best interest of Georgia’s citizens.”
