Spreading awareness with the theme of “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” set the stage for the North Georgia Mountain Crisis Network (NGMCN) Inaugural Love, Honor, Cherish Gala. The gala, held at The Art Center in Blue Ridge February 10, raised over $30,000. These funds will be used to provide services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
April Ross, executive director of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, talked about the reality of domestic violence.
After telling her story of being a victim of domestic violence, Ms. Ross stressed the importance of people understanding the problem and supporting victims and organizations like the North Georgia Mountain Crisis Network that provide resources including a safe place for victims to live.
The crisis network, established in 1986, has an annual budget of over $1.3 million that is partially funded through grants.
According to NGMCN Executive Director Erin Bradburn, the balance of the budget, approximately $300,000, is met through fundraising and thrift store revenue. Each year, the NGMCN serves hundreds of victims from Fannin, Gilmer, and Pickens counties who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault with safe shelter, legal advocacy, and outreach services.
“The gala would not have been possible without support from the community. We appreciate all of the local business owners being supportive of the NGMCN and especially for supporting the Love, Honor, Cherish Gala.” said Emily Dunn, NGMCN board member.
NGMCN Board Co-chair Kim Folger said, “The event was a huge success, not only did people enjoy a beautiful evening with friends, wonderful music, and delicious food.”
The NGMCN will be announcing details of the second annual “Love, Honor, Cherish Gala” soon as the organization plans for 2025.
