Boy Scout Troop 32, with the help of the North Georgia Honor Guard, recognized the retirement of Larry Dyer during a special ceremony last week.
Dyer has been scouting with the Boy Scouts since 1954, and after a 33-year long stint with the Armed Forces, he joined Troop 32 in 2015. The Boy Scouts of Epworth’s Troop 32 gathered on September 5 to celebrate and tell stories of Dyer’s service to the troop.
David Lewis, Troop 32 scoutmaster and Nick Wimberley, member of the Troop committee, took the opportunity to reminisce on years of scouting together.
“I never saw Larry – not an inch – move away from anything we had to do,” said Wimberley.
“He was a leader [to the boys] through a pandemic,” said Lewis.
Mathew Monroe, Senior patrol leader of Troop 32, said, “I don’t know this troop without Mr. Dyer.”
Monroe and Lewis presented Dyer with two awards: an honorary engraved plaque commemorating Dyer’s service and a book of photos of the countless events Dyer took part in for the troop.
“Epworth has a strong troop because of the adults who made it happen,” Dyer said as he thanked parents and volunteers.
“I would not be retiring if it weren’t for things like this,” Dyer said in reference to his mobility. “Thank you for all the good wishes.”
