Kim Patterson receives state STEM Scholar Award

West Fannin Elementary School (WFES) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teacher Kim Patterson has been awarded the 2021 Georgia STEM Scholar Award by the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers.

The award recognizes teachers who display “passion and determination to provide students with innovative and challenging STEM experiences” as they work to integrate STEM education in their classrooms to equip students with enhanced educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Mrs. Patterson teaches students from kindergarten to fifth grade within her STEM/STEAM Lab,” Fannin County School System Director of Applied & Integrated Instruction and CTAE Director & STEM/STEAM Coordinator Lucas Roof said. “She incorporates state-mandated mathematics and science standards, the engineering design process, and scientific inquiry into every STEM/STEAM project that she provides to her students. She inspires students to think critically, problem-solve, have perseverance, communicate effectively, and develop the self-confidence they need to succeed now and in the future. She also integrates computer science, coding, and robotics into her lessons for all students when possible.”

Roof, who recommended Patterson for the award, explained to award board members that Patterson not only performs “STEM magic in her classroom,” but also frequently collaborates with other teachers, community members and businesses to have an even broader impact on not only her students but the community as a whole.

“Without the dedication and talents of Mrs. Patterson, WFES would not be where it is today when it comes to STEM education,” Roof said. “She has also inspired such a large number of students and parents to take STEM seriously over the last four years that the local middle school and high school are now making significant progress in STEM education. Thus, not only has Mrs. Patterson humbly helped WFES, but she has also helped our entire school system and our entire community.”

Patterson expressed her pride in West Fannin’s STEM program, stating, “It is an honor to be nominated and to receive this award. I am proud of the work we are doing in STEM education.”
