FCHS students won't see finals

Improvement days take place of exam days

Fannin County High School students will have Grade Improvement Days rather than Exam Days  this year.

Assistant Principal Heather Collis explained, during a School Governance Team (SGT) meeting Wednesday, October 21, that the school’s goal was to avoid having a test be punitive to a student’s grade because of the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve had many students who have been quarantined, some numerous times, who even though their keeping up with their work, they’re still missing that classroom component,” she said. “We’ve had classrooms that have had to be adjusted for the times that we’re in. So, after we met with our faculty and our leadership, we would like to make our traditional final exam days grade improvement days.”

The exact language of the school’s decision states, “During the 2020-21 school year, non-EOC classes at Fannin County High School will offer grade improvement sessions for students at the end of each semester. Grade improvement activities may include exams, projects or other work developed and assigned by the teacher. Grade improvement sessions will be optional for students who have an average of 70 or above in the class. Students with an average of below 70 in the class will be required to attend.”

This decision was unanimously approved by all members of the SGT.
