A Fannin County High School (FCHS) student was immediately detained by School Resource Officers (SRO) after a hit list of death threats he allegedly made was found on a computer.
Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby said the list was discovered Friday afternoon, February 14.
Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant and SRO Commander Darvin Couch said as soon as the list was discovered he and SRO Deputy Sheriff Tommy Shook were called and took the suspect into custody from a school administrator’s office where he had been taken.
Details were given to the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office. Representatives of those agencies made the decision to have an ankle monitor placed on the suspect and confine him to his home over the weekend pending a Monday, February 17, hearing.
At that hearing, a Juvenile Court judge ordered the youth be detained at the Youth Detention Center in Dalton for ten days pending another hearing.
That second hearing was held Thursday morning, February 27. District Attorney Frank Wood said the judge ordered the defendant placed on an ankle monitor with “very strict” conditions of release.
He will remain on the ankle monitor until his next hearing.
Wood said the youth has been charged with 16 counts of Terrorist Threats, one of those against a teacher at the school, one count of Disruption of a Public School, and one count of Reckless Conduct.
Couch said that under school system policy the student is banned from all school property.
Couch also confirmed that as soon as the list was discovered school administrators called the parents of the threatened students to tell them of the situation.
The suspect’s name is not being released because he is a juvenile.
