Fannin readying for recount as runoff looms

The eyes of the nation were on Georgia following November 3’s 2020 General Election, which resulted in close federal and statewide races across the ballot.

Former Vice President Joe Biden received more votes statewide than President Donald Trump, receiving 2,465,781 votes to Trump’s 2,455,428. However, the majority of Fannin County voters cast their ballot in favor of Trump with 12,144 votes. Biden collected 2,571 votes in the county.

Fannin County Election Supervisor Mary Ann Connor is prepared for a recount of votes statewide due to the razor-thin margin.

Nationwide, Biden out polled Trump.

Republican Senator David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff’s race for US Senate will go to a runoff after neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Statewide, Perdue received 2,456,322 votes, and Ossoff received 2,366,163 votes. In Fannin County, Perdue received 11,950 and Ossoff received 2,415.

The state’s other senate seat, which featured 20 candidates on the ballot, will also see a runoff between Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Ralphael Warnock. Loeffler received 1,270,089 votes statewide, and Warnock received 1,611,943 votes.

However, Congressman Doug Collins received the most votes in Fannin County with 7,528 votes to Loeffler’s 3,869 and Warnock’s 1,694.

The runoffs are set to take place Tuesday, January 5.

Republican Andrew Clyde will replace Collins as the representative for the 9th Congressional District after he received more votes district-wide than his opponent Democrat Devin Pandy. District-wide, Clyde received 292,396 votes and Pandy received 79,653. In Fannin County, Clyde received 11,938 votes to Pandy’s 2,396.

State Senator Steve Gooch will continue to serve District 51 after receiving 84,694 votes district-wide to opponent June Krise’s 17,595 votes. In Fannin County, Gooch received 11,945 and Krise received 2,394.

David Ralston will also continue to serve in the State House for District 7 after receiving 27,009 votes to opponent Rick D. Day’s 5,231 district-wide. In Fannin County, Ralston received 12,027 votes to Day’s 2,246.

Following the election, some Fannin residents realized their My Voter Profile page showed an Absentee Ballot status when they had not submitted an Absentee Ballot. Connor explained that this is seen when anyone votes early outside of their regular precinct.

“Anytime you’re not in your actual precinct, it is considered absentee,” she said.

Connor spoke to the record turnout of 14,877 voters in Fannin County, stating, “It’s amazing. Every election should be like that.”

The county saw 4,606 residents vote on Election Day and 10,271 vote early or by Absentee Ballot.

Those wishing to vote in the January 5 runoff who are not already registered to vote can still register by December 7.
