The Fannin County Board of Commissioners voted to provide all county employees with a 3% cost-of-living raise following an executive session meeting Tuesday, April 13.
“The budget was left flat, which we’re thankful for,” Chairman Jamie Hensley said. “The county employees are used to getting a cost-of-living raise each year, and we, after talking it over, we’ve decided to give the employees a 3% cost-of-living raise this year, and it will be effective next pay period.”
When asked why the raise was discussed in an executive session rather than the public meeting, County Attorney Lynn Doss said, “The personnel, we had to ascertain what money we had and whether or not it was going to apply to all personnel or certain personnel.”
The board announced that a report for the Whitepath Fabtech Hazardous Material Survey would be available following a real estate discussion in the executive session.
The report shows that asbestos-containing materials were identified as vinyl composition floor tile, floor tile mastic, remnant flashing, roof coating, remnant parapet, remnant roof and flashing.
Lead-based paint was also found in the following locations: Paint on wood door to shop; Paint on metal door to the basement; Paint on structural beam on wall; and, Paint on structural support in warehouse.
While the board did not discuss the report in an open meeting, it can be found in full on the county’s website at www.fannincountyga.com.
The board also discussed a legal issue while in executive session.
Following the session, the board voted to issue a six-month moratorium on building a structure more than 72 feet from the footers to the top of the roof. However, this topic was not related to the legal issue discussed in the executive session, Doss said outside of the meeting.
Doss told The News Observer that the moratorium was issued in response to a request from the Land Development department to prevent a large structure from being built in the county before the department is able to complete their current work to refresh the county’s ordinances.
